Jacob barely twitches at the knees suddenly sticking into his ribs. Take a lot more than that to move him (even if it does amuse him some that Alec got startled). Yeah, the vampires can be as silent as they are fast when they want to be. He knew Edward was coming over the second his scent turned their direction. Hadnât been his preference, considering now everyone knows a humanâs riding Jacob like a horse. But desperate times call for desperate measures. The wolf shifts himself a little to make it easier for Alec to dismount him, glancing at him to make sure heâs good. Then turns his attention to the clearing in front of them. Still far enough away theyâre not disturbing the disgusting thing, but close enough that a blitz is going to land if necessary. Itâd be easy to change back right now and talk, but⊠one, heâll just phase again the moment the fight starts and two, Alec doesnât need the distraction.
Granted, the younger wolves (more by time than looks) are all a little anxious, some chomping at the bit and wanting to lunge forward into attack, others nervous about what it is theyâre looking at. Both Jacob and Paul and their respective Betas are being very heavy-handed on their orders to keep everyone from charging in, made more difficult because they canât go snarling at a row of wolves behind them, which is a little more the usual battle formation. Spread out as they are, pocketing the woods with their vampire allies, itâs a very unusual setup. And all for this one creature? Yeah, doubt and annoyance and insulted pride run rampant.
Edward is more than used to the look and lets Alec have his few seconds of surprise and intrigue. Though his smile does slip into something a little charm-smug as he looks to the side at Jacob. âItâs okay, Jacob,â he murmurs, soft voice definitely edged with teasing. âHe just thinks itâs absurd weâre actually working together.â Oh yeah, Edward can read minds. Jacob probably should have told Alec that. âHe stared at you longer.â
Someone tell Bella to get her trolling husband out of my face!
Just because they put their past differences behind them and Jacob made peace with Bellaâs choice doesnât mean the two canât clash on occasion. Mostly because they can still be dicks to each other, though itâs more playful banter and teasing than those hate-filled venomous things Jacob used to fling around. Edward can still needle him though. Like now. Stop trying to flirt with the guy whoâs apparently crushing on him!
âTwelve in one pack. Eight in the other. Nine in my family.â Edward offers the numbers before Jacob can protest and the wolfâs ears flatten in annoyance, a quiet snarl rippling in his chest and mouth. Even if theyâre working together, Alec doesnât need to know all the details! There are advantages in the unknown if they ever need them⊠But whatâs done is done and Edward listed his own covenâs numbers as well, so⊠guess maybe since Alec is the one with the experience in demon hunting here, he should be given the lowdown of what his current âresourcesâ are.
Quite the number, hm. Granted two of the twenty-nine are still young, with Renesmee (while only 4 chronologically) still being around 13 in appearance and the youngest wolf being 16 when he phased four weeks ago. Neither of the two should be underestimated, though both remained on the outer ring of the allianceâs current surrounding web and guarded by Carlisle and Sam respectively due to Alecâs warning.
With the pleasantries exchanged, Edward and Jacob both listen to Alecâs explanation of the matter, the thoughts relayed through the wolves while Edward and Alice would assist in spreading the information among the coven. âIf we can touch it, we can hold it down.â It went without saying likewise that they would do their best to avoid any teeth or claws or other sharp bits. The sudden âsuggestionâ of an order gets both moving and Edward all but vanishes in a flash. Jacob silently departs from the boulder heâd left Alec on, blitzing through the foliage. Another wolf, this one chocolate brown with lighter fur on his face, alights near Alec. Quil. Left in charge of keeping Alec safe and giving him a ride if necessary (which came with its own share of ribbing).
Not quite sure what âdistractionâ to use, Jacob did what he thought best: namely emerge from the woods and stand in the light, snarling a loud challenge at the creature consuming its woody meal. So long as it focused on him, then Alec could get a shot, right? Instinct told him to go for the kill, attack it, but no. They had to wait for it to become corporeal. Bella and Edward remained on either side of the clearing, ready to dash in and attack or distract or whatever else might be necessary in case the creature go ahold of their friend. Everyone else was in place by now.
